"The Hustle" - Alan Wilkis

I began to ride my bike in the city while I was studying at GW and developed a crush on this hipster who lived halfway across town. He rode his bike all over the city and so I asked my parents to send me mine and I started to do the same. Little did I know at the time how much this activity would become a key part of who I am. Nearly 10 years later, I still ride my bicycle just about everywhere. I’ve been a daily rider in Washington, DC, New York City, Madrid, and now, Barcelona.

I discovered this short film while I was in university and the song became an instant favorite of mine. The video shows two urban cyclists navigating their city in complete harmony.

“The film spins a visual ballad between the two cyclists experiencing the city in their own unique ways. Both cyclists are city dwellers who amidst the chaos of the concrete jungle have created a private and peaceful psychological space as they traverse the streets. They are both alone and yet they are both very much aware of each others presence. The film speaks to the harmony with one's environment that can be found while riding a bicycle in a city and the synchronistic connection we can have with those we have not even met.”

The song, by Alan Wilkis of Big Data, is a simple instrumental track with warpy synthesizers and piano but driven by the drum line that kicks in at minute 1:40. Much like the film suggests, it’s the perfect tune for a ride in your city.

"Wherever you Sleep" & "Safe" - Bay Ledges

Wherever you Sleep” is the latest release from LA-based Bay Ledges (led by singer, songwriter, and producer Zach Hurd). It is a classically beautiful breakup song with intentionally optimistic and upbeat melodies throughout.

It’s a wistful track about a former love with lyrics that perfectly capture the challenge associated with getting over someone and yet melodies that are optimistic and upbeat.

The music video for “Wherever you Sleep” was just released and it does a great job capturing the dichotomous nature of the song with its nostalgic beach memory feel.

Content-wise, “Wherever you Sleep” is a big shift from the first Bay Ledges song that I discovered. “Safe” is a playful song that evokes the complete magic of falling in love. When I first discovered this song in January, I think I kept it on repeat for an entire week. Much like falling in love with a person, I was obsessed with this song. I’m still completely awe-struck by its ability to musically represent the sensation of new romance. The simplicity of the guitar, percussion, and vocals at the beginning make the appearance of the synth all the more magical towards the end. At minute 1:35, I can’t help but completely lose it to the music.

“Wherever you Sleep” will be on the new EP released in November. To support the EP, Bay Ledges will go on tour throughout the US this fall. Find dates here and go see them live for me!

"Trouble" - The Knocks feat. Absofacto

“Trouble” is a catchy, repetitive tune by the Knocks featuring vocals by Absofacto that encourages listeners to overcome their fears and pursue their heart’s desires. The lyrics paired with the funk and pop melodies make for an encouraging and upbeat song perfect for dancing in your apartment or driving down the highway.

The song is undeniably catchy but the video is what really inspires. The video shows an agoraphobic gentleman who is unable to leave his apartment even though his “heart wants to.” With the support of an imaginary alien friend and some solid tunes, the protagonist is able to finally leave his home after getting down in his living room.

While I have no problem leaving my apartment and traveling overseas, I know just how crippling fear can be. At the same time, I also know that the moment you step into discomfort is when the real magic begins. This song is the perfect reminder to listen to your heart and take a risk regardless of the fear.

While this song has been out for over a year, I figured it was perfect for my first blog post as I’ve been wanting to start a music blog for quite some time now.

I hope to share new releases as they come across my radar but for the first month I will share some of my favorite classics. You can expect a mix of soul, funk, disco, pop, and rock (just about any song that grooves).
